How to do it
- Focus shift, 40 seconds: near as the dot grows, far as it shrinks.
- Eye circles, 40 seconds: clockwise, then anticlockwise.
- Figure eight, 40 seconds: one way, then the other.
- Blink reset, 30 seconds: slow, full blinks.
- Look into the distance for a moment before you go back to work.
Why it helps, and what the evidence says
The full reset covers the three things screen work cuts down on: changing focus distance, moving your eyes, and blinking fully. Of the three, blinking exercises have the best evidence for screen comfort. Focus and movement exercises have only small studies behind them. It's a comfort routine, not a treatment, and it won't change your prescription.
Tips
- Move only as far as feels easy, keep your head still, and stop if you feel dizzy, get a headache or see double.
- Hold your thumb up for the focus shift part.
- Great as the last break of the day.
